The Cathedral, designed by Robert W. Gibson in the 1880s, was constructed in phases over a hundred year period and remains largely incomplete today. John G. Waite Associates prepared a conditions assessment of the Cathedral as the first portion of a projected historic structure report.
Priorities for repair and restoration work included replacement of the slate roofing above the choir, new standing seam copper roofs on the choir side aisles, replacement of the asphalt shingle roof above the nave and transepts with standing seam sheet metal roofing, and repair and restoration of the sandstone façades. Construction has included replacing the choir and choir side aisle roofs, and repairs to the sandstone buttress facing, repointing of the brownstone tracery in the great east window (one of the largest stained glass windows in the U.S.), as well as the replacement of the nave roof.
