The Rockaway Courthouse is a three-story, marble-clad steel framed structure that was constructed in the 1930s. The building was largely abandoned in the 1970s, and has been sitting vacant and exposed to the elements for the past 30 years. The City of New York intends to use the building for classroom and administrative office space for a satellite branch of The City University of New York.
John G. Waite Associates has completed an existing conditions survey and measured drawings of the building, and has developed programming and planning guidelines for the building’s adaptive use in conjunction with representatives from CUNY. The firm is currently preparing schematic design, design development, and construction documents for the building and its immediate landscape, which will achieve LEED certification as part of New York City’s new sustainable design initiative.
